Which agility weaves should you choose? Why we prefer fixed weave poles

Published 2026-06-05 · Author: Linnea Ängström

Weave poles are one of the most technically demanding obstacles in agility. They place high demands on the dog's technique, independence and ability to work at high speed with precision.

When the time comes to invest in your own weaves, many handlers come across the terms Free Pole and Fix Pole. Both systems are used in the agility world, but they are built in different ways.

In this guide we go through the differences between the two systems, what the FCI rules say and why we at Lineup most often prefer fixed weave poles. A transparent note: Lineup is a reseller of Galican agility equipment, and our experience is shaped by that. We still aim to give an honest picture of both systems.

What is a Free Pole weave?

System 01

What is a Free Pole weave?

A Free Pole weave consists of a base where each pole can be removed individually. The poles slot into dedicated mounts and can be quickly assembled or taken apart as needed.

Pros

  • Quick to assemble and disassemble
  • Easier to transport
  • Flexible solution for instructors
  • Individual poles can be replaced quickly

Cons

  • Poles can move slightly in the construction
  • Less solid feel compared to fixed systems
  • Often requires more attention during setup
What is a Fix Pole weave?

System 02

What is a Fix Pole weave?

In a Fix Pole system the poles are permanently mounted to the base. The entire weave acts as one coherent construction where each pole stays locked in position.

Pros

  • Very stable construction
  • Consistent feel during training
  • Robust solution for frequent use
  • Minimal pole movement

Cons

  • Takes more space when transporting
  • Slightly longer setup time
  • Less flexible for some types of technique training

What do the FCI rules say?

The FCI agility rules specify dimensions, number of poles and distance between poles, but do not specify whether the poles must be fixed or removable. This means both Free Pole and Fix Pole can be used as long as the obstacle meets current design and safety requirements.

According to the FCI a weave must consist of 12 poles with 60 centimetres between the centre of each pole. FCI Agility Regulations ↗

Which system is used at competitions?

It varies between manufacturers and event organisers. Most modern competition weaves are, however, built to be very stable and to handle dogs working at high speed with powerful technique.

Many handlers therefore find that a Fix Pole weave feels closer to what they experience at competition venues. Galican FCI Competition Slalom ↗

Our take

At Lineup we personally prefer fixed weave poles. That does not mean Free Pole is wrong. Many handlers appreciate the flexibility and the easier handling.

For us the choice is mainly about training quality. When the poles are fixed to the base, the weave feels more robust and consistent. The whole obstacle behaves the same way every time it is used.

For teams that train a lot of speed, compete regularly or want to create as predictable a training environment as possible, we see this as a real advantage. A stable construction also gives a more professional impression and a higher quality feel in everyday training.

That is one of the reasons we have chosen to work with Galican's weave solutions, available as both Fix Pole and Free Pole.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Fix Pole safer than Free Pole?

We have not found any research or FCI rules showing that one system is safer than the other. Many handlers do however feel that a more stable weave gives a more predictable training experience.

Can Free Pole be used in competition?

Yes. If the weave meets current rules, both Free Pole and Fix Pole can be used.

What do professional agility handlers use?

It varies. Many handlers pick the type of weave that best matches their training goals and preferences.

How many poles should an agility weave have?

According to the FCI a competition weave must consist of 12 poles, 60 centimetres apart from centre to centre.

Sammanfattning

Summary

Both Free Pole and Fix Pole have their strengths. If you prioritise flexibility and easy handling, a Free Pole system can be the right choice. If you value stability, consistency and a robust construction, a Fix Pole weave is often the better option.

At Lineup we prefer fixed weave poles because we find that they give a more consistent training experience and a higher quality feel day to day.
